Japan has pledged Rs 2.6 billion in grant assistance to Nepal for the reconstruction and maintenance of the BP Highway, which connects Kathmandu with the eastern Tarai.
An agreement was signed at the Ministry of Finance in the presence of Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal and Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal. Finance Secretary Ghanshyam Upadhyaya and Japanese Ambassador Toru Maeda signed the document on behalf of their respective governments.
The 159-kilometer BP Highway, originally built with Japanese aid, suffered heavy damage in several sections during last year’s floods and landslides, particularly near the Roshi River.
Finance Minister Khanal thanked Japan for its continued support, calling it a trusted development partner. Ambassador Maeda said the assistance would help restore the highway and further strengthen Nepal–Japan cooperation.
