A Nepali Congress (NC) leader and Member of Parliament (MP), Deepak Giri, has demanded that Nepal be declared a Hindu nation, reflecting the opinion of a section within the party that holds a similar view.
Speaking to the media at the Parliament building on Tuesday, MP Giri pointed out that the people's demand for the declaration of Nepal as a Hindu nation was ignored during the constitution-making process.
He said, “The opinions of the people during the constitution-making process were not entertained. Those opinions should be respected. At that time, over 80 percent of the people supported making Nepal a Hindu nation.”
“At that time, no one had demanded doing away with the Hindu nation. Many people around the world wanted to see Nepal as a Hindu nation. Even now, these records and opinions should be reviewed,” he added.
This statement follows a similar remark from another Nepali Congress MP and former general secretary of the party, Shashank Koirala, who had also sought declaration of Nepal as a Hindu nation.
