The CPN (Maoist Centre) has expressed serious concern over what it described as “false, defamatory, and character-assassinating” reports and social media posts targeting its chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and his family.
In an official press statement issued on Saturday, the party condemned such reports as a deliberate smear campaign launched during a politically sensitive period, stressing that the contents were not only misleading but also intended to harm the leadership’s reputation.
“The Constitution of Nepal guarantees freedom of expression, but it also prohibits the use of media for slander, defamation, and personal attacks,” the statement read. It further accused some outlets of violating journalistic ethics and legal standards by publishing unverified, biased, and sensational claims without ensuring factual accuracy or presenting the concerned party’s viewpoint.
The Maoist Centre particularly challenged the claims that two trucks carrying Rs 20 million were moved from Dahal’s residence prior to the Gen-Z protest, and that security personnel were used as domestic helpers or that eight guards were deployed at Ganga Dahal’s residence, calling these allegations entirely baseless and demanding proof from the media concerned.
The party said it had requested relevant authorities to investigate and take legal action against such misleading content under Nepal’s cyber laws, emphasizing that future instances of similar misinformation would be the sole responsibility of the publishers and broadcasters themselves.
The Maoist Centre also urged the public not to be misled by such false and malicious propaganda being spread across digital platforms.
