The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has revised the transaction ceilings for debit cards through an amendment to the Integrated Directives on Payment System, 2081, aimed at strengthening financial discipline and digital payment security.

According to a circular issued by the NRB’s Payment System Department on October 10, the new provision, enforced under Section 45 of the Payment and Settlement Act, 2075, reduces the per-transaction limit for debit cards from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 20,000.

Similarly, the daily transaction limit has been lowered from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 50,000, and the monthly limit has been revised from Rs. 400,000 to Rs. 300,000.

However, the central bank clarified that the existing limits for prepaid and credit cards remain unchanged. Prepaid cards issued by non-bank service providers will continue to carry a maximum per-transaction limit of Rs. 5,000 and a monthly ceiling of Rs. 25,000.

The revised directive is part of NRB’s broader effort to enhance oversight of electronic transactions and curb misuse in the growing digital payment sector.
