The Kathmandu District Court has ordered Durga Prasai and seven others to stay in custody while their case moves forward. They are being investigated for their role in a violent pro-monarchy protest held on March 28.
The order was given by Judge Dhruba Raj Karki at midnight on Thursday. The court said they must remain in custody until the trial is complete. However, they have the right to appeal the decision in the High Court.
Those remanded with Prasai include Saroj Gautam, Gokarna Shahi, Dandapani Regmi, Sushil Baral, Keshab Basnet, and Kumar Tamang. Meanwhile, 32 other people involved in the same case have been released on bail.
The charges relate to a protest led by Prasai that turned violent. Two people died , journalist Suresh Rajak was set on fire by protesters, and Sabin Maharjan was shot dead by police. There was also major damage to public and private property due to vandalism, arson, and looting.
Prasai, described as the protest leader, is facing serious charges including treason, attempted murder, criminal mischief, and organized crime. The court said there is currently enough evidence to keep the accused in custody for trial.
