The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has imposed a ban on burning plastic, plastic products, and other waste materials in open spaces within its jurisdiction.

Issuing a public notice, the Environment Management Department of KMC warned that individuals found violating the rule could face fines of up to Rs 10,000.

According to the department, as temperatures drop, more people have begun burning plastic and waste to stay warm or dispose of garbage, a practice that has significantly worsened air pollution in the Valley.

Department Chief Sarita Rai said the decision aims to control rising air pollution and protect public health. She noted that smoke from open burning particularly harms children, elderly citizens, asthma and heart patients, and those with chronic illnesses.

KMC has urged the public to refrain from burning plastic or waste and to cooperate with local authorities for proper waste management to maintain public health and environmental balance.
