Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol said the Consumer Court has carried out small but significant work during its first year of operation. Speaking at a goodwill exchange program organized on the occasion of the Consumer Court’s establishment day, she stated that a consumer is not only someone who purchases goods but also a symbol of a conscious and aware citizen.
Dangol noted that everyone in society is a consumer, including producers themselves. “Within this one year, the Consumer Court has done limited but meaningful work. A consumer does not only mean a person who buys goods; it also represents an aware citizen,” she said, adding that there is no need to question who a consumer is because everyone falls under that category.
She also said that when people raise issues related to consumer rights, they are not advocating for someone else’s rights but for their own. According to her, the Consumer Court became necessary because trade, business, and the market have not been as disciplined as expected.
Dangol explained that laws are required to make the market more organized and disciplined, and penalties must be imposed where wrongdoing occurs. She expressed confidence that the Consumer Court will play an important role in bringing the market onto the right track and maintaining discipline.
She further emphasized that rights and responsibilities related to consumers are not limited to a single institution but are a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
