Senior leader of the CPN (Unified Socialist) and former Prime Minister, Jhala Nath Khanal, has expressed concern over a possible upcoming water-sharing agreement between Nepal and India. Speaking at a book launch event held on Saturday to mark the birth anniversary of Pushpalal Shrestha, Khanal warned that such a treaty could harm Nepal’s national interests if proper balance is not maintained with both India and China.
"I’ve heard that a new water treaty between Nepal and India is being prepared," Khanal said. "If Nepal fails to maintain balanced relations with both India and China while signing this treaty, it could become another blow to our national sovereignty."
Khanal said his remarks were mainly directed at Maoist Centre Chair and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda," who had just left the event after giving his speech. Khanal urged Prachanda and other opposition leaders to pay attention to the issue through media if not in person.
He also raised concerns about the proposed Koshi High Dam, saying the public and political leaders need to be properly informed.
“Nepali people must know how and why the Koshi High Dam project is being discussed. We need to understand whether it serves our national interest,” Khanal added.
