From now on, health insurance services in Nepal will be provided using the national identity card.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Dr. Krishna Prasad Paudel, Executive Director of the Health Insurance Board (HIB), and Namraj Ghimire, Director General of the Department of National ID and Civil Registration, to link health insurance with the national ID.
According to Bikesha Malla, Information Officer at HIB, citizens’ identities will be checked digitally using their national ID numbers. This will make the health insurance system safer, faster, and more reliable.
He added, “We will combine the data of HIB and the Department, and provide health insurance services using the national ID card.”
Registration and renewal using the national ID card will start on April 8.
Currently, 10.2 million people are insured under the Health Insurance Board.
