In a move aimed at easing foreign travel, the government has scrapped the controversial six-point guideline on visit visas and introduced a simplified system.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the decision was made following a proposal from the Department of Immigration. Under the revised rule, travellers will now only need a passport valid for at least six months, a valid visa for the destination country, a two-way air ticket, and a self-declaration confirming voluntary travel.

Earlier, visit visa applicants were required to provide hotel bookings, family details if staying with relatives, and proof of carrying at least 500 U.S. dollars, among other documents. A self-declaration was also mandatory for travellers heading to Gulf nations such as the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.

The government decided to remove these provisions after widespread criticism and confusion. Officials say the new rule will make visit visa travel more convenient while helping authorities prevent human trafficking and fraud conducted under the pretext of visit visas.
