During the election silence period on Falgun 19, Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has objected to misleading information being spread through social media.
Thapa expressed concern over what he described as a coordinated campaign of false narratives, misinformation, and manipulated videos targeting him and other Nepali Congress candidates. He stated that such activities not only violate the election code of conduct but also constitute a direct attack on democratic values and norms.
Urging social media users to remain alert and responsible, he appealed to them to immediately report fake content to the respective platforms. He specifically cautioned against unverified and sensational materials circulating on platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube.
“Pause for a moment before sharing any content, and verify the facts,” Thapa urged, adding that highly provocative and emotional posts are often misleading and intended to confuse voters.
He warned that the spread of misinformation during such a sensitive period undermines healthy democratic competition, emphasizing that only truth, reason, and civic awareness can counter such falsehoods. Stressing the importance of active citizen participation in strengthening democracy, he called on supporters and well-wishers to stand on the side of truth through responsible use of social media.
