For the first time in South Korea’s history, a sitting president has been charged with insurrection. Former President Yoon Suk Yeol is accused of trying to impose martial law, which he announced on live TV on December 3rd. He claimed, it was a necessary action to protect the country from "anti-state" forces linked to North Korea. The announcement came during a deadlock over a budget bill, corruption scandals involving his administration, and investigations into several cabinet ministers.

On December 14, Yoon was impeached by parliament and suspended from office. His actions have caused South Korea’s biggest political crisis in decades, dividing the nation. While many have condemned his attempt to seize power, his supporters have organized protests demanding his release and reinstatement.

Prosecutors formally charged the former president, with insurrection after a court in Seoul rejected an extending his detention. The charge could lead to life imprisonment or even a death penalty, though executions are unlikely since South Korea hasn’t used the death penalty in decades.

The Constitutional Court is now deliberating whether to permanently remove Yoon from office or reinstate him. If removed, a new presidential election must be held within 60 days. Yoon is expected to face trial alongside his former defense minister and senior military officials, who are accused of aiding his martial law plans.

The political crisis has deeply divided South Korea, with widespread protests and debates about the country's future leadership and governance.
