Former Minister Mohan Basnet has been released on bail after posting Rs 2.5 million in connection with a high-profile corruption case involving the purchase of a telecom monitoring system known as Teramox by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority. Basnet appeared before the Special Court on Sunday, where the judges ordered his release on bail.
This case dates back to May 15, when the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) filed corruption charges against Basnet and 15 others, accusing them of irregularities in the procurement process. The CIAA claims the alleged corruption caused a massive loss of over Rs 3.21 billion to the government.
Following the charges, Basnet was automatically suspended from his role as a Member of Parliament. He has been charged under Section 17 of the Corruption Prevention Act, which deals with causing harm to public property.
The case has drawn significant public and media attention due to the scale of the alleged financial damage and the involvement of high-ranking officials.
