The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Flood Forecast Division has issued a flood alert for 39 districts across Nepal, warning of potential flash floods due to continued rainfall and rising river levels.
According to the division, although rivers such as the Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Mahakali, and their major tributaries like Kankai, Kamala, Bagmati, Eastern and Western Rapti, and Babai are currently below the danger mark, water levels are likely to rise. The department has urged people living near these rivers to remain alert.
Areas identified as particularly vulnerable include settlements located near rivers, streams, and steep slopes that are prone to landslides. Similarly, roadways and transport routes running close to water bodies may face disruptions or dangers due to rising water levels.
Ongoing hydropower projects and other infrastructure under construction near rivers are also at risk, as are agricultural lands and irrigation systems situated in flood-prone zones. The Flood Forecast Division has called on both local authorities and the general public to remain alert, follow regular weather updates, and refrain from traveling through hazardous areas during periods of intense rainfall. Updates and alerts will continue to be broadcast through local FM radio stations and official social media platforms.
The division has placed the following 39 districts under yellow alert, indicating a moderate risk of sudden flooding:
Likewise, a lower level of flood risk has been predicted in Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, and Khotang districts.
