The Finnish government has decided to send military personnel to Greenland at the request of Denmark, alongside its Nordic neighbors Sweden and Norway. In a statement, Finland’s Ministry of Defence said the decision was made in close cooperation with the Government of Greenland and Denmark’s Ministry of Defence, and in coordination with NATO allies, to continue Danish Armed Forces exercises in Greenland.
At Denmark’s request, Finland will deploy two liaison officers to Greenland to assess local conditions and evaluate options for possible future military exercises. The statement noted that additional efforts by the alliance are needed to strengthen security in the Arctic region.
Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen said Finland has been contributing to Arctic security since joining NATO. Sweden, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France are also participating in similar operations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland.
