BBC- Firefighters are battling a fast-spreading fire in southern California, which has now reached over 10,000 acres. The fire, located about 45 miles north of Los Angeles, has forced thousands to evacuate. Authorities have warned that Thursday will be a critical day for controlling the blaze, with strong winds expected to make firefighting efforts more challenging.
The region is already reeling from destructive fires this month, and the National Weather Service has issued a red-flag warning for the area, warning of dangerous fire conditions through Friday. More than 31,000 people were evacuated on Wednesday as the fire spread in the Castaic Lake area in no time, threatening homes and schools.
While firefighters have managed to control some of the fire, high winds and dry conditions continue to fuel its spread. Scientists have noted that climate change has increased the risk of fires in California, making the vegetation more prone to burning.
The fire comes amid ongoing concerns about the potential risks of mudslides and flooding with forecasted rain this weekend. As the region deals with these fires, there are also smaller fires burning in other areas, though some evacuation orders have been lifted. Firefighters are facing difficult conditions as they continue to fight the flames.
