With only 10 days left before the House of Representatives (HoR) election, the Election Commission (EC) has asked local-level people’s representatives not to take part in election campaigning.
The Commission said this request is meant to ensure the election is free, fair, transparent, cost-effective and conducted without fear. Referring to the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, it reminded everyone that following the code is their responsibility.
The EC said it is closely monitoring whether political parties, candidates and other concerned groups are following the rules. It also mentioned receiving complaints that some local-level representatives have been involved in campaign activities in violation of the code of conduct.
According to the code, local executive officials are allowed to campaign for their political parties only outside the local level where they currently hold office. However, they are strictly banned from using government resources, facilities or vehicles for campaigning.
The Commission has warned local officials not to take part in any campaign activities within their own local level if it goes against the election code of conduct.
