A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Sulu Sea in Malaysia. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 12:57 a.m. local time on Monday.
Although the epicenter was located under the sea off the coast of Sabah, the quake was recorded at a significant depth of 620 kilometers.
The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department reported that there have been no immediate reports of damage to infrastructure or human casualties. Authorities have increased monitoring in coastal and high-risk areas.
Malaysia’s Meteorological Department has urged the public not to panic and to continue their regular activities. Residents in Sabah and Sarawak felt light tremors for a few seconds.
Local media also reported that mild tremors were felt in some high-rise buildings in neighboring countries, including the Philippines, Brunei, and Singapore.
