A dispute has emerged between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) regarding the list of sports associations selected for the 20th Asian Games, set to take place in Japan in 2026.
On Tuesday, the NOC held a press conference and announced that 30 sports associations had been registered for participation. However, the Ministry issued a statement soon after, claiming that 31 sports associations had been registered instead.
The Ministry further clarified that the current leadership of the NOC has already been declared illegitimate by the government. Therefore, any list submitted by that leadership, using its letterhead and official seal is not recognized and holds no legal or administrative validity.
The Ministry expressed concern over what it called an attempt to spread misinformation and questioned the motive behind claiming that certain associations had not been registered due to ministry negligence. It emphasized that any such communication from the NOC lacks official recognition unless endorsed by the government and the National Sports Council.
Despite the controversy, the Ministry assured that it remains committed to supporting players and the development of sports in Nepal. It stated that the registration process is being carried out in accordance with official procedures and called on all concerned not to be misled by exaggerated claims aimed at undermining the Ministry’s credibility.
The 20th Asian Games are scheduled to take place in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
