The CPN-UML Central Committee has amended decisions taken by its recent Statute Convention, restoring the party’s leadership and committee structure to its earlier form. With the revision, the Central Committee has again been expanded to 301 members.
The second Statute Convention held in Bhadra had limited office-bearers to 15, scrapped the Standing Committee, and reduced the Central Committee to 251 members. However, at a meeting on Sunday, party chair KP Sharma Oli presented a proposal to increase the number of office-bearers, citing internal pressure. The proposal was endorsed by a majority.
Under the revised arrangement, the party will have 19 office-bearers, along with a 45-member Standing Committee and a 99-member Politburo.
The move has sparked criticism within the party. Senior Vice-Chair Ishwar Pokhrel said increasing numbers would not strengthen the party, stressing that changing circumstances demand meaningful reform rather than structural expansion.
