Nepali Congress lawmaker Maya Rai has been released on a bail of Rs 10 lakh following an order from Kathmandu District Court Judge Mahendra Bahadur Karki. She was arrested for her alleged role in embezzling funds from the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative in Kalimati.
Rai, a former joint secretary of the cooperative, is accused of misusing around Rs 25 million during her time on the executive board between fiscal years 2016-17 and 2017-18. Investigations revealed she authorized loans without collateral and invested in unregistered entities, breaching cooperative regulations.
Although Rai was initially left out of the January chargesheet involving 39 others accused of misappropriating over Rs 1.19 billion from 690 depositors, public backlash led to her arrest on April 25.
Interestingly, during interrogation, Rai admitted signing key documents at the request of a housemate, claiming she didn’t fully grasp the implications. Despite the law allowing 60 days for an investigation, her case reached court in just 17 days. Now out on bail, the controversy around her involvement continues to stir debate.
