Food items worth Rs 11.57 billion were imported through the Birgunj customs point in the first six months of this fiscal year. This is Rs 210 million less than the same period last year.
According to Uday Singh Bista, Information Officer at Birgunj Customs, food imports have slightly decreased this year. In the first six months of the previous fiscal year, 16 types of food items worth Rs 11.78 billion were brought in through the checkpoint.
Rice made up the largest part of the imports. During this period, 154.3 million kilograms of rice worth Rs 5.68 billion were imported, down from Rs 6.9 billion last year.
Maize imports totaled Rs 3.41 billion, while rice products worth Rs 1.61 billion and malt worth Rs 330 million were also imported. Other food grains like sorghum and millet accounted for Rs 237.3 million.
