Have you ever wondered where the heart of ancient Kathmandu still beats today? The answer is Kathmandu Durbar Square, one of Nepal’s most historical and cultural places. This is where centuries of history come alive through temples, palaces, and courtyards that reflect Nepal’s royal era. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kathmandu Durbar Square gives a glimpse of Nepal’s rich artistic and cultural past.

Located at the heart of the capital, this historic square was once the main royal palace of Kathmandu’s kings. The beautiful buildings here remind us of the time when Kathmandu was ruled by the powerful Malla and Shah kings. It is a place where kings were crowned, important decisions were made, and festivals continue to be celebrated today.

Even though the 2015 earthquake left many scars, the spirit of this place is still alive. Restoration work is ongoing, with artisans and engineers working carefully to rebuild the temples and monuments in their original styles. Slowly but surely, the square is regaining its former glory.

Among its many treasures, the statue of Kaal Bhairab stands out. This 12-feet-tall sculpture, carved from a single block of stone, is believed to be the protector of Kathmandu. In the past, people even used to come here to seek justice.

Another major attraction is the Hanuman Dhoka Palace. Built in the 16th century, it was the home of Kathmandu’s royal family for generations and still stands as a symbol of Nepal’s proud history.

Thanks to recent efforts, the roads and surroundings of Kathmandu Durbar Square have become much cleaner and better organized. Locals appreciate the work being done, especially under the leadership of Kathmandu’s mayor, Balen Shah.

Let’s all respect and protect this beautiful place for future generations.
