In a bold daylight robbery, thieves stole jewellery worth €88 million (£76m; $102m) from the Louvre Museum in Paris, BBC reported.
French prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the loss was “extraordinary,” noting the greater damage to France’s cultural heritage. The stolen items included crown jewels and gifts from Napoleons I and III to their wives, along with pieces once owned by Queen Marie-Amélie.
Four masked men used a truck with a lift to reach the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon, cut through a glass window, and fled with the loot in under eight minutes. A damaged crown from Empress Eugénie was later found along their escape route.
The robbers remain at large, and officials fear the jewels may already have been dismantled or sold.
