Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that women’s participation and access in the media sector—considered the fourth pillar of the state—is still low.
Speaking at a program organized by Nari Sanchar Griha Jhapa in Birtamod, she said that although the involvement of women in media is gradually increasing, their number is still small. She expressed concern that women are still limited in roles related to news editing, decision-making, and policy-making. She also mentioned that the presence of women in leadership positions in the media is very low.
The former President highlighted that women journalists play an important role in raising issues related to women, who make up half of the country’s population. She added that stories written by women journalists about issues they have experienced or witnessed carry more sensitivity, truth, and identity.
Despite challenges, she praised the dedication, confidence, and commitment of women journalists towards social change.
On the same occasion, former President Bhandari also honored donors who contributed to the endowment fund of Nari Sanchar Griha. She also launched a book titled ‘"Sancharma Nari"(Women in Media), published by the organization.
Regina Gautam, chairperson of Nari Sanchar Griha, said that the organization has collected Rs. 5 million for its endowment fund.
