US President Donald Trump has given TikTok 75 more days to sell its US operations or face a ban. The popular app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, was told by Congress it must be sold to an American company because of national security concerns. US officials worry the app could be used by China to spy or influence people, BBC reported.

This is the second time Trump has extended the deadline. He said on his social media platform, Truth Social, “We do not want TikTok to go dark. We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the deal.”

ByteDance said it is still talking to the US government but hasn’t reached a final agreement yet. The company also said any deal needs China’s approval. Talks became more difficult after Trump recently announced new taxes on products from China. After that, China reportedly refused to approve any TikTok deal unless those tariffs were discussed.

Several companies are now interested in buying TikTok. Reports say Amazon has made a last-minute offer. Other interested buyers include businessman Frank McCourt, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Microsoft, and investment companies like Blackstone and Andreessen Horowitz. Trump said four groups are in talks to buy the app, but didn’t name them.

Vice-president JD Vance is leading efforts to find a buyer. Trump also suggested that the U.S. might offer China some relief from tariffs if it agrees to the TikTok sale.

TikTok says it has over 170 million users in the US and wants to stay active in the country. The situation has become part of a bigger argument about free speech, national security, and the role of foreign tech companies in the US.
