Despite ongoing efforts for a ceasefire, Russia has continued attacks on Ukraine. In response, US President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to the BBC, President Trump has announced that the US will send the Patriot Air Defense System to Ukraine. He had already promised to send expensive and advanced weapons to support Ukraine.
Trump warned that if a peace agreement is not reached within 50 days, countries doing business with Russia will face 100% customs tariffs. He also said that more missiles and ammunition will be provided to Ukraine through NATO.
After meeting with NATO Chief Mark Rutte, Trump said the US has requested European countries to send their own Patriot systems to Ukraine. Rutte confirmed that the needed military support will be sent and that Europe will cover the cost.
Trump's recent statements show strong anger towards Russia. He called President Putin a “tough guy” and said talks alone won’t help.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trump for his support and promised stronger cooperation.
Russia has not officially responded yet, but Russian analysts have called Trump’s announcement an empty threat. The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for three years.
Earlier, the US had paused sending weapons to Ukraine. But now, Trump has canceled that decision and signed a new deal. In the new agreement, NATO will pay the US for some of the weapons it sends to Ukraine.
