US President Donald Trump has announced a 35% tax on goods imported from Canada starting August 1. He made the announcement through a letter shared on social media.

Currently, the US already has a 25% tax on some Canadian products. Canada and the US were in trade talks hoping to reach a deal by July 21, but Trump’s new warning seems to change that timeline, according to international news agency AFP.

Canada and Mexico have been trying to meet Trump’s demands to keep the USMCA free trade agreement (which includes the US, Mexico, and Canada) on track.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government will continue to protect Canadian workers and businesses as the new timeline moves forward.

This week, Trump has also sent similar letters to more than 20 other trade partners and mentioned he will soon announce new taxes on the European Union as well.
