U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a 25% customs duty will be imposed on goods imported from India, starting tomorrow, August 1.
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump criticized India for buying large amounts of military equipment and energy from Russia. He said such actions are “unacceptable” and warned that India will now face a 25% import tax as a result, according to BBC Hindi.
The U.S. and India had been in talks for a fair and balanced trade agreement for the past few months, but no formal deal had been signed.
India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry responded by saying it has taken note of President Trump’s remarks and is currently studying the possible impacts of this decision.
Meanwhile, India’s opposition party, Congress, accused the government of failing in its foreign policy. They claimed the entire country is now paying the price for Prime Minister Modi’s close relationship with President Trump. Members of the ruling BJP party, however, called for renewed talks with the U.S. to resolve the issue.
Earlier, during a conversation with journalists on Air Force One, Trump had already hinted at imposing strict tariffs on India.
