A tragic accident took place early this morning when a plane crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, resulting in at least 85 fatalities. The Jeju Air flight, which had departed from Bangkok, was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members. The crash occurred when the aircraft experienced a landing gear failure, causing it to land on its belly and skid before catching fire.

Two crew members, a man and a woman, were rescued alive. Officials say there is little chance of finding more survivors. The victims include 39 men and 46 women, according to South Jeolla Fire Service.

Video footage showed the Boeing 737-800 skidding at high speed and erupting into flames, with debris scattered across the runway. Firefighters extinguished the blaze using water cannons.

The crash happened at 9 a.m. local time, and all flights to the airport have been canceled. Investigators are now looking into the cause of the accident. South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, visited the site and directed emergency teams to use all resources for the rescue effort.

The crash comes during a politically unstable time in South Korea, with President Yoon Suk Yeol suspended and Choi stepping in as acting president just two days ago.
