As the eviction deadline for the Manohara squatter settlement expires today, tensions are rising between the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and residents. The city had issued a one-week ultimatum to vacate the area, warning that demolitions would follow.
In response, “Save the Motherland” campaign leader Durga Prasai has publicly opposed the move, declaring that he will not allow Mayor Balen Shah’s plan to proceed. Speaking at a mass gathering on Sunday, Prasai accused Balen and KMC police chief Raju Pandey of using force against the poor instead of addressing corruption within the system.
He further alleged irregularities involving Balen and his aide Victor Paudel, warning political parties not to manipulate squatters for political gain.
City officials, however, remain firm on their stance, saying the eviction will go ahead as planned to clear encroached public land.
