A court ruling has thrown cold water on the government’s plan to appoint the governor by flouting the existing age limit vis-a-vis such an appointment, at least for five days.
The interim order from a bench of Supreme Court justice Nityananda Pandey comes in the wake of the government’s tweaking of existing guidelines on the appointment and nomination of officials and members in finance ministry-related public entities, on February 5 to make way for the appointment of the governor aged above 65 years.
The bench has summoned the petitioners and the defendants to appear before it on April 18 for a further hearing.
After the February 5 move, advocates including Bishal Thapa, Bikas Bhattarai and Ananta Raj Luitel had moved the court, demanding scrapping of the tweaked provision naming the Office of the Prime MInister and the Council of Ministers, the MInistry of Finance, Governor Recommendation Committee and the Nepal Rastra Bank as the defendants.
