Russia launched one of the biggest air attacks on Ukraine since the war began over three years ago. The attack happened overnight and targeted the capital city Kyiv along with other parts of the country.

According to the BBC, Russia sent 550 drones and fired 11 missiles at Ukraine. Ukraine’s air force said it shot down 476 of those drones using its air defense systems. Even though many drones were destroyed, the attack still caused fear, damage, and destruction in several areas. Cities like Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv were also hit.

CNN reported that Ukraine called this one of the largest attacks since Russia started the full-scale war in February 2022.

This attack happened shortly after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. After the call, Trump said he was disappointed because Putin did not show any sign of wanting to stop the war. Trump added that there was no progress toward peace during their talk.

After Putin rejected a ceasefire proposal, Russian drone attacks on Kyiv became more intense. Ukraine also responded by launching drones into Russia. Officials said a woman was killed in one of those attacks.

Meanwhile, a high-ranking Russian military officer, Major General Mikhail Gudkov, was killed. His death is seen as a big loss for Russia.

As the war continues into its third year, many people in both Ukraine and Russia are still suffering, and peace seems far away.
