In the first five months of the current fiscal year (2081/82), Nepal earned 13.04 billion rupees by exporting electricity to India. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) exported 1.76 billion units of surplus electricity from Shrawan to Mangsir, mainly from the monsoon season, at an average price of 7.39 rupees per unit.
The electricity was sold through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) and through agreements with the Indian states of Haryana and Bihar. The NEA earned 8.15 billion Indian Rupees from these exports. Shrawan had the highest exports, with 4.15 billion rupees, and Mangsir had the lowest, with just 0.28 billion rupees.
According to the NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising, the floods and landslides damaged the Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Plant, reducing production and affecting exports. Currently, there are no exports because of low production, but exports are expected to resume once the water levels in rivers rise.
Nepal has also started exporting 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh through India. Despite some challenges, NEA plans to export 30 billion rupees worth of electricity this fiscal year. Last year, Nepal became a net electricity exporter, exporting 17.06 billion rupees while importing 16.93 billion rupees.
