The European Union (EU) and Indonesia have announced that they have reached a political agreement on a free trade deal.
According to the AFP news agency, this is seen as an important step in global trade, especially at a time when the US President's policies are creating uncertainty.
Speaking to journalists in Brussels, EU President Ursula von der Leyen said that the world is currently going through a period of economic uncertainty and political instability. In such times, she said, it is important for partners to work more closely together.
She said the EU and Indonesia have reached a political agreement on an ambitious free trade deal.
Talks between the EU — which has 27 member countries — and Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, had been ongoing since 2016 to increase trade and investment.
The European Commission said this agreement is a big achievement and is expected to be officially finalized by September.
As the US threatens to impose higher tariffs, the EU is working harder to strengthen ties with major global partners.
