The new Federal Parliament Building under construction in the northeastern area of Singha Durbar is still not fully completed, even though more than five years have passed since the foundation stone was laid by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in October 2019. The project, originally planned to finish within three years, has reached about 93% physical progress and 78% financial progress, but none of the 12 buildings in the complex are fully completed yet.
Previously, parliamentary meetings were held at the Birendra International Convention Centre in New Baneshwor, but the building was severely damaged in an arson incident during the Gen Z Movement. Because of this, authorities are preparing to hold the upcoming sessions in the new parliament complex even though construction is still ongoing.
According to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, the Ministry of Urban Development (Nepal) has promised to provide minimum infrastructure required for parliamentary meetings by early Chaitra. With elections already completed and new lawmakers arriving in Kathmandu, the government and parliament secretariat are working to make the new building ready for upcoming sessions despite the unfinished construction.
