World Pneumonia Day is being observed today (November 12) across the globe, with a focus on raising awareness, reducing child mortality, and strengthening healthcare systems to prevent the disease. Nepal has joined the global campaign with various programs and activities organized nationwide.

This year’s theme, “Save Children: Invest in Strong Health Systems for Prevention and Treatment” emphasizes the urgent need for investment in healthcare infrastructure and preventive care, particularly in low-income countries where pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of death among children under five.

In Nepal, the Ministry of Health and Population, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, has launched awareness campaigns in hospitals, schools, and local communities. Health experts have urged parents to ensure timely vaccination, maintain hygiene, and seek medical attention early to reduce fatalities.

According to the WHO, pneumonia claims the lives of more than 700,000 children globally each year. In Nepal, around 5,000 children die annually from the disease, mostly due to delayed diagnosis, poor access to healthcare, and lack of awareness in rural areas.

The government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare services, improving the supply of vaccines and antibiotics, and training health workers at the community level. Officials also highlighted the need for public participation in preventive measures to achieve the goal of ending preventable child deaths from pneumonia by 2030.
