The 16th memorial day of former Prime Minister and former President of the Nepali Congress, Girija Prasad Koirala, is being observed today with various programs.
Remembering his contribution to establishing peace in Nepal, the Nepali Congress and its sister and well-wisher organizations are organizing different events to mark the day.
Koirala passed away on Chaitra 7, 2066 BS due to pneumonia. He played a crucial role in ending the decade-long Maoist insurgency and paving the way for peace, ultimately opening the door for the establishment of a federal democratic republic in Nepal.
After then King Gyanendra dismissed the elected Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Ashoj 18, 2059 BS and began appointing his own prime ministers, public trust in the monarchy started to decline. Koirala later led movements against the monarchy.
On Magh 19, 2061 BS, when King Gyanendra imposed restrictions on political parties and took direct control as head of the government, Koirala united political parties and led a movement for the restoration of full democracy.
