The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has announced that electricity imported from India will now be supplied only during daylight hours, limiting it to 12 hours a day.

NEA has been importing over 600 megawatts of electricity daily from India to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. However, with the recent change in supply hours, concerns have been raised about the possibility of load shedding returning. Despite this, NEA has assured that there will be no immediate power cuts.

NEA spokesperson Chandan Kumar Ghosh stated that the electricity supply duration from India remains the same as last year. “Even with the limited supply time, we have alternative sources like Run-of-the-River (ROR) projects and the Kulekhani reservoir, which will contribute around 400 megawatts,” he said.

To manage the electricity demand, NEA has decided to limit the power supply to large industries during peak hours, which are from 5 PM to 11 PM. Some industries, particularly in the Terai region, may be affected due to poor transmission infrastructure. However, major industrial areas like the Kathmandu Valley, Morang and Butwal will not face any issues, according to Ghosh.

Additionally, 20 megawatts of electricity has been added to the national grid in the past week. NEA has also announced that more power will be supplied to the national transmission line from hydro projects in Baglung, Myagdi and other districts soon.
