Different communities in Nepal are observing Matatirtha Aunsi, which falls on the new moon day in the month of Baisakh as per the lunar calendar, on Sunday (April 27).

This is a special occasion for children to pay respect to mothers and mothers who are no more. It is a day to once again appreciate a key role they play in children’s lives by giving birth, nurturing them, educating them and helping them live up to their full potentials.

On this occasion, married women visit their maternal homes with gifts. Those without mothers visit Matatirtha, a pilgrimate site dedicated to deceased mothers on the outskirts of Kathmandu, where they take holy dips in a pond and perform Shraadha, a ritual dedicated to the departed mothers.
