One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded, measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale hit near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula early this morning, triggering tsunami waves across parts of Japan, Russia, Hawaii, and even threatening areas as far as the US West Coast and South America.

In Japan, dramatic footage showed four whales washed ashore in Tateyama City, Chiba, likely due to the sudden changes in water levels caused by the tsunami. Whales can become stranded when water quickly pulls away from the coast before a tsunami wave hits.

The first tsunami waves struck Hokkaido around 10:40 am local time. As sirens blared, residents took shelter on rooftops, and nearly two million people across Japan, especially in Hokkaido, Kanagawa, and Wakayama, were urged to evacuate.

In Hawaii, roads were jammed as people tried to reach higher ground, with long lines forming at petrol stations. US President Donald Trump issued a warning on social media urging residents in Hawaii, Alaska, and the Pacific Coast to stay alert and visit the official tsunami website for updates.

Tsunami watches are also in place for countries like the Philippines, Mexico, Chile, and Ecuador. Authorities around the Pacific are closely monitoring the situation and asking people to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.
