Madhesh Province Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav will seek a vote of confidence today after the Supreme Court ordered him to prove his majority within 24 hours. Yadav said he received the court’s written order only at 3 PM on Tuesday and notified the Provincial Assembly Secretariat accordingly.

The political equation in the 107-member assembly has become uncertain. The government needs 54 votes, but the UML has only 25 members, one of them suspended. Although one lawmaker each from the Nepal Socialist Party and RPP appears to support the UML, RPP’s internal action against its minister Kanchan Bicchha has added confusion.

The Supreme Court intervened after a seven-party alliance challenged the earlier government formation under Article 168(3) as “unconstitutional.” Today’s vote will decide whether Yadav stays in power and shape the future leadership of Madhesh Province.
