Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has decided to take strict action against dumping in public places. People caught throwing garbage on roads, footpaths, or other public areas will be fined between Rs 5,000 and Rs 15,000.
KMC’s Environment Department Head, Sarita Rai, said littering causes bad smells and harms public health. The rule will be enforced under the KMC Environment and Natural Resources Conservation Act, 2020. A monitoring team will take action against those who ignore warnings.
To improve waste management, KMC will set up transfer stations in six key areas in all 32 wards. Waste will then be transported to the Bancharedanda landfill for proper disposal.
Currently, some wards are already sorting waste at the source, and KMC plans to expand this to more areas. With Kathmandu generating 1,600 metric tons of waste daily, KMC is working to keep the city cleaner and healthier.
