Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced the launch of the Skill Fair 2025, a major initiative aimed at improving employment opportunities through practical skill-based training. The fair, starting from May 20, will provide free training to 2,082 individuals. The training sessions will be held over 30 days, totaling 100 hours, with six classes per day across 34 different skill categories in 10 key sectors.
The main goal of this program is to help people gain hands-on skills in areas where there is growing demand for skilled workers. According to Engineer Shailendra Jha, the coordinator of the Skill Fair Implementation Committee, the training will be organized in cooperation with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private companies and donor organizations.
Nepali citizens aged 18 to 58 years can apply for the program, though priority will be given to people living in the Kathmandu metropolitan area (both permanent and temporary residents), those affected by landfill sites, people with disabilities and individuals who previously ran businesses by the roadside.
The training will cover a wide range of sectors. In information and communication technology (ICT), participants will learn about digital marketing, drone operation, robotics, fiber optics and the basics of artificial intelligence. For those working with people with special needs, training will be provided in housekeeping and care services.
In the electrical and electronics sector, the program will include laptop and mobile phone repair, AC and refrigerator servicing and CCTV installation. The garment and fashion training will focus on garment fabrication and basic fashion design. The construction field will offer hands-on training in electrician work, plumbing, masonry, welding, and carpentry.
The hospitality sector will train individuals to become baristas, waiters, fast food service providers and bakers. The automobile repair training will include the maintenance of electric vehicles, light vehicles, and two-wheelers, both electric and fuel-powered.
Traditional skills will also be promoted through art and sculpture training, including thangka painting and terracotta work. Additionally, there will be classes in astrology and priesthood. The agriculture and personal care sector will include training in flower arrangement, beautician services such as makeup, nail technology, hair cutting and even an introduction to the stock market.
The Skill Fair 2025 is a unique opportunity for job seekers, aspiring entrepreneurs, and workers looking to improve or change their careers. It represents a meaningful step by KMC toward empowering citizens and strengthening the local economy through skill development.
