Addressing a program held on Martyrs’ Day in Kathmandu, Dangol noted that the freedoms, governance systems, and democratic practices Nepalis enjoy today are built on the sacrifices of the martyrs. She highlighted that citizens’ rights, inclusivity, and participation are the outcomes of these sacrifices, serving as a valuable gift to the nation.
Dangol stated that the day is an opportunity to remind young people of dedication and commitment, and inspire political leaders, activists, and the general public to draw lessons from the martyrs’ sacrifices.
“Wherever we are today, the democratic system and governance we practice, and the utilization of freedom and sovereignty, are possible because of the martyrs’ sacrifices. Citizen rights, inclusivity, and participation are their beautiful gift to Nepal and its people,” she said.
She added that the Kathmandu Metropolitan City organizes programs throughout Martyrs’ Week, from Magh 10 to 16, to honor those who gave their lives during the Rana-era and subsequent democratic movements, including Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand, and Gangalal Shrestha. Key memorial events are held at Teku Pachali, Shobha Bhagwati, and Sifal, with statues and parks dedicated to the martyrs.
Dangol also highlighted civic initiatives such as the construction of statues, parks, and the installation of an oxygen plant at the Gangalal Heart Center, all named after the martyrs, to ensure their legacy benefits citizens directly.
She urged that instead of simply commemorating martyrs on a specific day, their energy and vision should be integrated into daily governance, policy-making, and civic work. She pledged to continue working responsibly in her role to carry forward this vision.
