Malaysian security forces have dismantled a network accused of spreading propaganda for the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) and raising funds to support its operations. The group was primarily targeting Bangladeshi migrant workers living in Malaysia.
According to Reuters, a total of 36 Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in connection with the case. Authorities say the group had been active since April and was using electronic payment methods to transfer funds to Syria and Bangladesh. However, the police have not revealed the exact amount of money that was sent.
It is believed that the network could involve anywhere between 100 to 150 individuals. The arrested suspects were allegedly helping promote IS ideology among migrant communities while also acting as a fundraising channel for the group.
Malaysia has remained vigilant against terrorism since a 2016 attack in Kuala Lumpur linked to IS. That incident prompted a stronger nationwide crackdown on terrorist networks and extremist activities. This recent operation is part of the country’s continued effort to prevent radical groups from gaining ground and spreading their influence.
