The government is preparing to introduce a separate law regarding Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) citizenship.

Speaking at the meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak said that a new law will be made for NRN citizenship. He informed that those who get this citizenship will be given economic, social, and cultural rights.

He also said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is leading the process of drafting this law.

"The government is preparing a separate law for NRN citizenship. This law will ensure economic, social, and cultural rights for those who receive NRN citizenship, as per the spirit of the constitution. The same law will explain these rights clearly. We will soon present it in Parliament," he said. "Right now, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is leading this work. The draft has also reached the Home Ministry, so we should not include NRN citizenship issues in this current bill."

Home Minister Lekhak also said that the government is working to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2063 (2006) to solve problems faced by Gurkha soldiers.
