Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav has said that the government is determined to make safe drinking water accessible to 90 percent of Nepalis by 2030.
Speaking in Parliament during the budget discussion, Yadav explained that the government is making plans to use available resources in the best possible way to meet this goal.
He rejected claims that the water supply budget has been distributed unfairly, saying his ministry is working closely with all three levels of government to make sure every household, regardless of location, gets clean drinking water.
Even so, Yadav admitted that the lack of funds is making it difficult to expand water supply systems everywhere.
He also expressed frustration over restrictions placed by the Department of National Parks on laying pipelines from the Bagmati River inside Shivapuri National Park.
According to him, this has been one of the major hurdles in providing a reliable water supply to Kathmandu. Yadav further questioned why private companies don’t seem to face the same restrictions from authorities.
