Nepal’s tax system is headed for a major overhaul, with Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal announcing that broad reforms are already underway to make tax administration more efficient and technology-friendly.

At an “Economic Transformation Roadmap” event organized by the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) on Wednesday, Minister Khanal revealed plans for a single-window tax payment system, business renewal based on tax clearance certificates, and PAN registration through the National ID.

He said recommendations from the High-Level Economic Reform Commission are being implemented step by step. Khanal also clarified that the government will not change tax rates, saying this responsibility should lie with the next elected administration. With the election code of conduct approaching, he added that major policy decisions cannot be made at this point.

The minister emphasized that the public will begin to feel visible improvements in the economy “within a few days,” as reform measures roll out. CNI, meanwhile, urged the ministry to prioritize tax-system improvements outlined in its reform action plan.
