Deadly floods and landslides have claimed at least 14 lives in South Korea after days of relentless rain, with 12 people still missing and thousands forced to flee their homes.

Massive downpours since Wednesday have triggered destruction across the country washing away roads, burying homes, and flooding entire villages.

In the tourist town of Gapyeong, survivors were seen wading through mud and debris to reach safety, while in the central Chungcheon region, a landslide swallowed an entire village under dirt and rocks.

The southern region was hit the hardest — in Sancheong, 6 people died and 7 others are unaccounted for. Widespread damage has been reported to farmland, infrastructure, and livestock.

So far, over 9,000 people have been evacuated and 41,000 homes faced power cuts, local media said. Rescue operations are ongoing as fears grow that the death toll could rise.

The rain has now moved north, with Seoul and nearby areas bracing for more storms. Meanwhile, officials warn of an intense heatwave following the rains.

President Lee Jae-myung has declared the worst-hit zones as special disaster areas, promising full government support. Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung has ordered authorities to use "all available resources" for rescue and recovery.
